European Gaming and Betting Association members are highly compliant with minor protection measures in traditional advertising channels, according to the EGBA’s latest monitoring exercise of its pan-European responsible advertising code. However, the association has identified areas for improvement on social media.

The key findings were part of the association’s second monitoring exercise, conducted by the independent European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA). Following a first exercise in 2022, this latest assessment focused on minor protection measures, “revealing strong compliance in traditional advertising channels while identifying areas for improvement in social media.”

The monitoring, which concluded in December 2024, assessed 120 individual advertisements from EGBA members across multiple platforms including television, YouTube, websites, and social media channels in four selected markets: Greece, Spain, Romania, and the UK.

Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) in these markets assessed the compliance of the advertisements with the EGBA code and national regulatory and self-regulatory requirements, focusing particularly on content moderation, managing the exposure of minors, and safeguards against minors’ access to gambling content online.

The results demonstrated high compliance among EGBA members in television advertising and YouTube platforms, with the successful implementation of key minor protection measures such as age-limit requirements and restrictions on the use of celebrities and cartoon characters.

Social media advertising also showed strong adherence to age-limit symbol requirements, but the monitoring identified a need for more consistent application of age-gating mechanisms and forward advice notices across members’ social media profiles.

The assessment of influencer marketing practices of two EGBA members, in Spain and the UK, revealed strong compliance with content moderation and appeal restrictions while highlighting the need for enhanced transparency through consistent use of paid marketing disclosures (e.g. using an #ad hashtag).

“This latest monitoring exercise demonstrates our members’ commitment to responsible advertising and minor protection,” said Maarten Haijer, Secretary General, EGBA. 

“While we’re encouraged by our members’ high compliance rates across traditional media channels, we recognize there’s more work to be done in the social media space. At EGBA, we’re dedicated to promoting the highest advertising standards and will continue to work with our members to strengthen compliance with our code across all platforms.”

EGBA and its members will use the monitoring results to further enhance the effectiveness of the code and will continue to advocate for responsible advertising practices across the European gambling sector, the association said. As part of this commitment, the trade body invited operators who are not members of EGBA to sign up for the code.

Governor Phil Murphy’s proposal to increase taxes on online gambling and sports betting is facing mounting opposition from casino operators, online betting companies, and lawmakers from both parties. The proposal, part of the governor’s budget plan, seeks to raise the tax rates on both forms of gambling to 25%, up from the current 13% on online sports betting and 15% on internet gambling.

Murphy’s administration estimates that the tax hike would generate $402.4 million in additional revenue. While this is a small fraction of the $58 billion state budget, it directly targets the two fastest-growing segments of New Jersey’s gambling industry, a sector that generated $138.3 million in tax revenue from online sports betting and $358.3 million from internet gambling in 2023.

The proposal has sparked intense backlash from industry stakeholders, who argue that the tax increase could have serious consequences for the state’s gambling sector, workforce, and future investments.

Bill Pascrell III, a seasoned gambling industry lobbyist representing Atlantic City casinos, the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, and Monmouth Park in Oceanport, did not mince words in opposing the tax hike. “This is a terrible idea,” Pascrell said, as per a Press of Atlantic City report. “We are going to run a very strong lobbying and public education campaign against this.”

The Casino Association of New Jersey also came out against the proposal, warning that the tax hike “would threaten the stability of Atlantic City’s gaming and tourism industry, as well as the industry’s workforce.”

“These are very challenging times for the Atlantic City casino industry and its employees,” the association stated. “Tourism is down, and visitation has decreased at our brick-and-mortar casinos. This unnecessary tax proposal, against the backdrop of a weakened economic climate, would jeopardize our properties and ultimately hurt the working-class people it supports.”

The Sports Betting Alliance, an industry group that includes FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Fanatics Sportsbook, also voiced concerns.

“Increasing taxes on internet casino games and sports betting will jeopardize thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue the industries have generated in New Jersey,” said Jeremy Kudon, the group’s president. “Any effort to increase sports betting taxes on New Jerseyans threatens all of that progress.”

Support for the tax hike within the Democrat-controlled Legislature remains unclear. A similar bill introduced last April by Sen. John McKeon (D-Morris), which sought to raise the tax rate to 30%, has remained untouched in committee. Opposition to Murphy’s plan, however, is already surfacing from key lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Sen. John Burzichelli (D-Salem, Gloucester, Cumberland) and Sen. Michael Testa (R-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic) issued a joint statement denouncing the proposed tax increase.

“Increasing the tax to 25% is putting a New Jersey success story at significant risk,” they stated. “A tax increase would negatively impact jobs, industry investment, and our New Jersey customers, and it could affect future revenue growth for the state.”

Sen. Vince Polistina (R-Atlantic) argued that rather than imposing higher taxes on the gaming industry, the Legislature should adopt a 5% across-the-board tax cut that Murphy had previously suggested.

“Lower taxes on Atlantic City gaming operations have resulted in significant investment,” Polistina said. “Given the challenges in Atlantic City and with New York gaming on the horizon, I believe the tax rates on all gaming operations should remain the same so that we don’t jeopardize potential investment in the city.”

A report from Jefferies Equity Research predicted that the higher tax rates could cost Flutter, the parent company of FanDuel, $106 million, potentially leading to fewer free bets and less favorable odds for customers. Similarly, Entain, the co-owner of BetMGM, could see a $62 million hit to its revenues.

Pascrell emphasized that the online gambling and sports betting industry has been a major driver of job creation in New Jersey, generating 24,000 new jobs since internet gambling was introduced in 2013 and sports betting followed five years later.

The El Cortez Hotel & Casino just rolled out their finished renovation project on February 20th, including three new food and beverage outlets. Governor Kevin Stitt is holding firm on his vision for sports betting in Oklahoma amidst ongoing legislative debates over competing proposals. Stitt took to social media to resurface his past legalization proposal, which could clash with bills in the state legislature.

In an X post, Stitt said: “If the Legislature is going to pass sports betting in Oklahoma, it needs to be a fair deal for everyone – not just the tribes. I rolled out a solid, fair plan over a year ago.”

In November 2023, Stitt announced a plan to legalize sports betting in Oklahoma, allowing in-person wagers at tribal gaming facilities and mobile betting through state-licensed sportsbooks. The latter provision would open the door for commercial operators such as DraftKings or FanDuel.

“I promised Oklahomans if we pursued sports betting, we would do it right – and this plan does just that,” Stitt said in the release. “Thirty-five states have already legalized sports betting, and it’ll be a great revenue stream for the state. Tribes will be able to add it onto their existing infrastructure, and Oklahomans can access it right from their phone.”

His plan includes a 20% tax on mobile betting and 15% on retail wagering.

Multiple sports betting bills are being debated in the Oklahoma House and Senate, but none have gained significant traction, according to a report from Covers. Some favor tribal control over all sports betting, while others propose a model closer to Stitt’s.

Earlier this month, the Oklahoma Senate’s Business and Insurance Committee approved three sports betting bills, each taking a different approach. One measure would allow tribal casinos to offer both in-person and mobile betting on their lands while granting the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder a license for online sports wagering off tribal land. Another bill would give tribes complete control over mobile and in-person sports betting statewide.

Among the proposed legislation, Senate Bill 164, introduced by Republican Sen. Casey Murdock, most closely aligns with Stitt’s vision. The bill would empower the Oklahoma Lottery Commission’s board of trustees to negotiate agreements for sports wagering with “one or more other states or sovereigns” for in-person and mobile sports wagering while mirroring the governor’s proposed tax rates of 15% for retail betting and 20% for mobile.

Stitt’s remarks suggest some bills, including House Bills 1047 and 1101, are unlikely to earn his support. Both measures would place sports betting exclusively under tribal control, with H.B. 1101 including a provision for a voter referendum if necessary.

At the same time, even if a compromise is reached in the legislature, Stitt’s plan is likely to face resistance from the state’s gaming tribes. The Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association (OIGA) had previously said that any sports betting framework must align with existing Tribal-State Gaming compacts and be economically viable for all stakeholders.

Afterwards, there’s food, an outdoor terrace, a champagne bar, forum shops, and more! And the F1 Arcade. Grand Prix Plaza will open this spring.

Next, if driving an F1 race course isn’t scary enough, check out Universal Horror Unleashed at Area 15. This year round scare complex has four haunted houses based on Universal Monsters, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Exorcist, and the original Scarecrow the Reaping. Zoox is a company that provides a driver-less cab service, and they are currently testing their vehicles on the streets of San Francisco. Unlike similar vehicles, Zoox cabs are purpose built and don’t even have a steering wheel. The Amazon owned company says that their robo-taxis should be prowling the strip before the end of 2025.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has issued a cease-and-desist order against BetNow.eu Sportsbook, Casino, and Racebook (BetNow) for operating illegally within the state.

The offshore website offers a variety of casino games, including slots, poker, and live dealer options such as blackjack, roulette, and craps, along with sports betting and horse race wagering.

“This unlicensed operator not only violates Michigan law but also exposes consumers to significant risks,” MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in a statement. “Our job is to protect Michigan residents by ensuring that all online gambling is conducted legally and responsibly.”

The MGCB’s investigation found that BetNow is in violation of multiple state laws.

Under the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, only Michigan-licensed casinos and federally recognized tribal casinos can legally offer online gaming.

The Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act states that operating an unlicensed gambling business is a felony, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison, fines of up to $100,000, or both. 

Additionally, under the Michigan Penal Code, gambling on uncertain outcomes with financial stakes is prohibited.

BetNow allows deposits through various payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Zelle, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Tether, Bitcoin Cash, CashMG, and bank transfers. 

However, the site requires players to wager their full initial deposit before they can withdraw any winnings, a policy that may put consumers at a disadvantage.

The company has 14 days to cease operations in Michigan. If it fails to comply, the MGCB may take legal action with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.

The MGCB urges residents to use only licensed gaming platforms to ensure consumer protection and legal compliance.

What are your impressions of this year’s ICE, being the first to take place in Barcelona?

As this is the first ICE edition in Barcelona, the new venue is obviously a major point of interest. The new exhibition space is huge, which opens up a lot of new possibilities and opportunities for attendees.

In addition to the novelty of the venue, the first day was very productive for us, with many attendees showing interest in Imagine Live and our new products for the year, as well as our existing portfolio. 

We are making a bold statement with our showcase at ICE. As our slogan says, Imagine Live is about live casino reimagined. What we are proving here is that there are many new possibilities we can bring to the live casino experience.

What are some of the most in-demand games at the moment?

The live casino industry is very dynamic, so you have to keep coming up with something new to amaze your partners and players. Innovation and new technologies are what they are looking for, so the experiences we provide have to reflect that.

We have expanded not only in Armenia but also into other markets such as Romania. This expansion won’t slow down, as we have big plans to expand in other countries as well. I’m sure we’ll be able to achieve this goal with a very solid and dynamic team behind me.

This is a very dynamic industry and there are a lot of new things happening in terms of technology. Artificial intelligence is obviously a major development, and I’m very proud to say that we have incorporated AI into our portfolio with the Dealer Performance Tracker. It helps us track the performance of our dealers while improving the quality of the streams and the overall product we offer to our partners.

It is a major milestone for us, and one that I predict will have a lasting impact for years to come as we look to expand our use of AI technology in the future.

What are your expectations for the year ahead of us, in terms of expansion opportunities and the company’s sustained growth trajectory?

Last year was a year of continued growth. In 2024, we received major licenses including those from the UK, MGA, and Sweden. In addition, we recently received full certification from the Brazilian regulatory authority, making us fully compliant with Brazilian requirements – another milestone in our expansion.

These markets are a priority now, but we also plan to expand into additional jurisdictions in 2025. Among many, I would like to highlight Romania, Greece and Italy. Expansion isn’t just about getting licensed. It’s about partnering with the right operators and delivering a tailored solution that includes localization and language-adapted games. Only through this approach will players get to know Imagine Live better and be motivated to try our games.
