Betting and Gaming Council declares sports sponsorship and safer gambling must coincide

Casino News

The sports world in the United Kingdom is vast, consisting of horseracing, darts, football, and cricket, among other options. In the country, sports leagues have survived over the past few years amidst the COVID-19 due to sponsorship funding. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) members provide hundreds of millions in payments via levies, media rights, and sponsorship options. Betting operators also provide funds, helping leagues stay afloat during this vital time.

While support is needed during the pandemic, the BGC recently pointed out that its members must also work to promote safer gambling for consumers as well as sports stars when it comes to sports betting. The rate of gambling addiction is falling, but the BGC wants to ensure the decrease continues, especially during the holiday season as people may be more prone to wager.

Lower Problem Gambling Rate

The Gambling Commission recently released figures showing that the problem gambling rate fell from 0.6% to 0.3% in the year ending in September. While this is good news, the BGC wants to keep going. Chief executive of the group, Michael Dugher, stated that it’s time to continue to promote safer gambling.

“Christmas is an exciting time for sports fans across the country as we see a feast of sport from horse racing to the Premier League to the darts at Ally Pally. BGC members are proud to provide financial support to sport in a variety of ways, but it’s also important that this goes hand in hand with our work on promoting safer gambling.”

Dugher stated further that as the government works on the Gambling White Paper, the BGC is hopeful that safer gambling promotion will continue and be an integral part of the industry’s commitment to supporting sports.

Promoting Safer Gambling

There are several ways that United Kingdom operators have already been working on promoting safer gambling in the industry. EFL sponsor SkyBet and EPIC Risk Management teamed up to create a safer gambling education program while Betway offers a training option for Premier League clubs they partner with. The program focuses on responsible marketing and safer gambling practices.

Kindred Group has been busy with its Know Your Limits series, featuring four parts that helps to promote more responsible gambling. The operator teamed up with Wayne Rooney, Paddy Brennan, and Carl Frampton to create the program.

The BGC has been busy with its Young People’s Gambling Harm Prevention Program, with backing from GamCare and YGAM. Programs connected to sports have launched across the country to provide insight into safe gambling practices.
