Ohio Sports Betting Sets January 1st Launch Date

Industry

Well, Ohio sports betting will not be up and running in time for the start of this year’s NFL season. But take heart, because folks there will still be able to bet on next year’s Super Bowl. This according to the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

The Commission’s Executive Director, Matthew Schuler, says that January 1, 2023, will be the day that Ohio sports betting will officially start. When it does, it will be the single largest simultaneous launch of a sports betting market in the United States.

In the meantime, applications for licenses will be accepted from June 15th to July 15th. And estimates are that as many as 3,000 applications may be received. Those hoping for a license will need to work on hiring staff, training employees, developing partnerships, and other necessary compliance issues.

The state legislature originally passed sports betting regulation in early December of last year. The Governor signed it into law of December 22nd. Once up and running, Ohio sports betting will consist of both online and retail outlets, plus betting kiosks that are available in bars and taverns.

Updates on implementation and documentation will be made available by the Commission in the interim. Finalized versions of applications are already available on their website and remain mostly unchanged from a draft version published last month.
