Los Angeles Chargers reactivate OLB Joey Bosa prior to their NFL Playoff Run

On Friday, December 30th, 2022 the Los Angeles Chargers activated their dominant defensive edge rusher, Joey Bosa, from the injured reserve list prior to the National Football League’s week – 17 match – up versus the Los Angeles Rams.

“He’s looked good,” according to the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Brandon Staley. “This is going to be part of his return to play is getting out there and playing football. Excited to see him compete.”

Although the Los Angeles Chargers safety, Derwin James Jr., will now have to be out as he continues going through the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The Los Angeles Chargers are currently sitting at 9 and 6, and they have just recently secured a playoff spot with just 2 – games left in the 2022 – 2023 NFL regular season. The defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams are 5 and 10, and they have officially been eliminated from the NFL postseason as of now.

Joey Bosa practiced this week for the very 1st – time since he underwent groin surgery after the Los Angeles Chargers week – 3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he mentioned that he is feeling the best that he has in “years,” while explaining that his groin injury had been an ongoing problem but one that he was unable to address until it was completely torn.

Although Bosa is prepared to play this week the NFL’s pass rushing specialist will be limited to a certain number of snaps, according to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“He’s got to get his football conditioning,” Staley goes on to say. “It’s not like he’s going to go out there and play like he’s been playing for four, three months, but he’s going to go out there and play. That was our plan, that if he’s going to play, he’s going to play.”

Outside linebacker and premier edge rusher, Khalil Mack, expressed his excitement for Bosa returning to the Los Angeles Charger roster for week – 17 of the National Football League. Mack compiled 4 of his 8 – sacks this year in the 1st 3 – games when Bosa was playing in the Los Angeles Chargers starting line – up.

“It’s a great feeling, not only having him over there as a player, knowing the dynamic, the kind of player he is but understanding the energy and the character that he brings in situations and those scenarios when it’s a third down and we need a big stop,” Mack explained. “All those situational moments.”

In only the 3 – games that Bosa has played in so far this year, he has rolled for 7 – tackles, 1.5 – sacks, and 1 – forced fumble during the 2022 – 2023 NFL regular season.

Bosa’s Football Background      

Bosa was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he played his high school football for the Raiders. Joey decided to enroll at the Ohio State University where he excelled at the defensive end position for the Buckeyes. Bosa helped lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a College Football Playoffs National Championship in 2014. He was selected by the at that time, San Diego Chargers, with the 3rd overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft.

It did not take long for Bosa to dominate on defense for the Chargers as he was named as the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016. He was selected to the National Football League’s Pro Bowl 4 – times so far (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021). Throughout his great start to his NFL career Joey has already racked up 298 – tackles, 59.5 – sacks, 75 – tackles for losses, 133 – QB hits, 14 – forced fumbles, and 3 – fumble recoveries.

Bosa Family Success in the National Football League

Joey Bosa’s father, John Bosa, played defensive end in the National Football League from 1987 to 1989 with the Miami Dolphins. His younger brother, Nick Bosa, who is also a beast at the defensive end position currently plays for the San Francisco 49ers. Nick has only been with the San Francisco 49ers for several NFL seasons, but he has already made a name for himself as one of the best defensive players in the National Football League already.
