NCAA Re-Thinking College Sports Betting

Industry

Several universities and the NCAA are now reconsidering college sports betting and how it may impact their student bodies. Reports are that they are thinking of changing their policies on the matter, as betting on their games continues to spread across the country.

Since the 2018 Supreme Court decision which changed the gambling landscape in America, the expansion of sports bets on collegiate sports has been the topic of much debate. Some states have even legalized betting on sports while restricting any wagers on college athletics.

The NCAA and their universities know there is a need to adapt to the legal landscape in America surrounding gambling and college sports betting. However, the activity is growing on campuses, and with it a growing sense of responsibility for their 500,000 student-athletes.

Since the legalization of the activity, there have been concerns about game integrity of games. Those concerns have prompted the NCAA to consider what they believe are necessary modifications. There is a renewed emphasizes on the importance of actively preventing problem gambling among college athletes.

These potential changes coincide with NCAA President Charlie Baker’s recent acknowledgement that sports betting could serve as a revenue opportunity for the NCAA. But given the circumstances, the NCAA has prioritized college sports betting prevention as a major objective, while still acknowledging the expansion of the industry.
