Ex-Manchester City Striker Sergio Aguero Makes Surprise Entry into 2023 WSOP Main Event

One of the most exciting things about the World Series of Poker is seeing a plethora of celebrities, athletes and musicians all participating in the game we love to play. And this year has been no exception with the likes of James Woods, Broadway star Aaron Tveit and UFC fighter Colby Covington all cutting up on the felt the last few weeks.

Then on Wednesday, July 5, a huge shock entrant rocked up to the Horseshoe and Paris, Las Vegas to play the WSOP Main Event. Former Manchester City and Argentina forward Sergio Aguero entered poker’s biggest event and cruised through Day 1c and ended up bagging an above starting stack for Day 2.

The soccer superstar is still in contention to make it through to the next stage as he currently sits with 150,000 in front of him, which is almost twice as much as what he started with this morning.

Aguero Transitioning to Poker?

Aguero has just two recorded results on The Hendon Mob. However, both cashes are from earlier this year. Aguero cashed in back-to-back days at the Argentinian Enjoy Poker Tour in February, where he came in third place in a $330 Hyper Turbo for $2,625. He then cashed in the series’ $1,100 Main Event before bowing out in 24th place for another $3,295.

Can Aguero Emulate Max Kruse?

Plenty of soccer players have been spotted across numerous poker tables over the years, with the likes of Neymar, Ronaldo and Gerard Pique all known to have dabbled in the game. Neymar and Pique were recently spotted at various European Poker Tour stops while legend of the beautiful game Ronaldo reunited with PokerStars last summer.

Neymar and Pique have also found success when playing, cashing in numerous events, but neither have been quite as successful as Max Kruse, an ex-soccer player from Germany who ended a decade-long pursuit of a WSOP bracelet last year.

At the 2022 WSOP Europe, the former Vfl Wolfsburg forward outlasted 413 entrants to win the €1,650 NLH Six-Max event for €134,152.

Who is Sergio Aguero?

Sergio Aguero is a former professional soccer player, having retired from the sport in 2021.

He was a striker for clubs such as Independiente, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and FC Barcelona. He also played for the Argentinian national team on 101 occasions and participated in numerous World Cups.

He is most famous for scoring a last-minute goal for Manchester City, which helped secure his team their first-ever Premier League title.

Aguero is considered one of the best strikers in Premier League history, scoring 184 league goals across 275 appearances and also has a Gold Medal for Argentina from the 2008 Olympic Games.
