The threat of another Las Vegas strike involving culinary and hospitality workers is over… almost. Originally, there were about 20 resorts in danger of seeing about 8,000 workers walk off their jobs. This was a separate work stoppage ultimatum from the union in the past year, with the first coming in October.
The deadline for this latest Las Vegas strike was pushed back from Friday to Monday, as progress was being made in talks between the resorts and the union. Several of the original 20 properties were able to reach deals with their workers, and by last week there were only 10 resorts that still needed agreements.
Late today, more talks led to more agreements being reached with Sahara Las Vegas and the El Cortez. Then word came that several more casinos were able to decide on new contracts, leaving just the Golden Nugget, Virgin Las Vegas, and the Downtown Grand as the only properties still in jeopardy.
Talks are expected to resume again Monday, if no agreements are reached over the weekend. However, in a worst case scenario, only those three properties will be affected if a Las Vegas strike cannot be averted.
The Culinary Union began picketing at of all unsettled Downtown Las Vegas companies today. If no agreements are reached Saturday or Sunday, you may being seeing picketing at the unsettled casinos listed above.
