Thiago “azevedo45” Azevedo Takes Down the Irish Open Online Main Event at PokerStars

Poker News

The 2024 Irish Poker Open is less than three weeks away, and PokerStars got into the spirit by running a 17-event online edition of Europe’s longest-running poker tournament. Over $1.1 million was distributed throughout the Irish Open Online, with $27,678 of that princely sum now nestled in the PokerStars account of Thiago “azevedo45” Azevedo.

Azevedo was one of 2,297 entrants in the $109 No-Limit Hold’em 8-Max Irish Open Online Main Event. That bumper crowd created a $229,700 prize pool, way more than the advertised $150,000 guarantee.

The top 335 finishers received a slice of the prize pool, with the likes of Ronan “Sw33ney” Sweeney, Andras “probirs” Nemeth, Tom “hitthehole” Middleton, Jerry “Perrymejsen” Odeen, and Mathew “matfrankland1” Frankland all seeing a return on their investments.

Each of the nine finalists received more than $2,200 for their efforts, but none of them wanted to collect that amount when $33,913 was reserved for the eventual champion.

Andre “99Palanke” Luis‘s deep run ended in a ninth-place finish worth $2,260, with Poland’s “huziu” busting one place later, banking $3,171. The final table officially became short-handed when “Mastermandel” crashed out in seventh for $4,449.

The pay jumps began growing more substantial with each elimination. “BetForNympho” fell in sixth for $6,241, then “Darapan” got their hands on the $8,756 fifth-place prize; the remaining four players were now guaranteed five-figure sums.

The first of those $10,000+ prizes, $12,283 to be exact, went to Malta’s “DoctorPoker44” before “Biguethi339” was relieved of their chips, and they collected $17,231 in prize money.

That elimination left Azevedo heads-up against “Sprinkler01” in a battle with over $9,700 on the line. That difference proved too much, and the heads-up duo struck a deal to shorten the payouts; “Sprinkler01” was leading at the time.

Azevedo came from behind, banked $27,678 and cliched the title of Irish Open Online Main Event champion, leaving “Sprinkler01” to collect a $30,409 consolation prize.

If you missed out on Irish Open Online glory, you could always head to Dublin, Ireland, for the 2024 Irish Poker Open. The Royal Dublin Society in Ballsbridge plays host to eight days of intense poker action, including the €1 million guaranteed Main Event.

Online satellites for the 2024 Irish Open Main Event are running right now at PokerStars costing as little as €1.10. Satellites feed into the €109 buy-in Qualifiers, but you may be better off using your €109 entry for one of the three MEGA qualifiers PokerStars has planned.

16 Irish Open Main Event packages are guaranteed on March 10 and 17 at 8:00 p.m. GMT, and a last-ditch MEGA qualifier, with eight packages guaranteed, runs at 8:00 p.m. GMT on March 24.

Each package awards a €1,150 seat to the 2024 Irish Open Main Event plus €350 in cash towards your expenses. Last year, David Docherty won his way into the 2023 Irish Open Main Event via a €109 satellite and went all the way, becoming the Main Event’s champion, a result good for €365,000.
