Galaxy sets up memorial area to mourn Dr. Lui Che Woo ahead of December 5 funeral

Dr. Lui Che Woo, the founder and chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), will be laid to rest on December 5, following his passing earlier this month at the age of 95.

A vigil is scheduled for Dec. 4 at the Hong Kong Funeral Home, with a public memorial service and funeral ceremony the next day at 9 a.m. Burial will follow at the Hong Kong Buddhist Cemetery, according to an obituary published by his family.  

To commemorate his legacy, GEG will open a memorial area at the Galaxy International Convention Centre in Macau. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 3, the public, employees, and community members can pay their respects and leave condolence messages in a memorial guest book.  
 
Born in Guangdong and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Lui established the K. Wah Group in 1955, laying the foundation for a business empire spanning property, hospitality, construction materials, and entertainment. In 2002, he founded GEG in Macau, transforming it into one of the region’s leading integrated tourism and leisure companies.  

Under his stewardship, GEG became the first company of its kind to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (2005) and was later included in the Hang Seng Index (2013). Dr. Lui was instrumental in promoting the moderate diversification of Macau’s economy, with GEG achieving recognition for its innovative and sustainable development.  

Dr. Lui was also celebrated for his philanthropic contributions, particularly in education, healthcare, and public welfare. He donated to build over 100 schools, established scholarships, and supported high-end research initiatives.  

In 2015, he founded the Lui Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilization, promoting harmony and sustainable development. His philanthropic efforts earned him top recognition on the Hurun China Philanthropy List (2016) for Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas Chinese.  

GEG praised Dr. Lui as a visionary leader who inspired future generations. “Dr. Lui Che Woo lived his life with integrity and a pioneering spirit,” GEG said in a statement. “His profound patriotism and selfless dedication earned him the respect of all sectors of society. His spirit and legacy will forever remain in our hearts.”
