Sports Betting in New York Hits $1.26 Billion

September was an amazing month for sports betting in New York, which was the first month of the NFL season. The kickoff of professional football translated to damn near a $1.3 billion handle for the state, which was almost 45% higher than August. This is the second straight month that sportsbooks there have shown a positive turn around. Prior to this, they had seen a four-month slide.

All that betting translated to over $143 million for the state in gaming revenue, which was a record. The numbers blew right past the old record of just  over $124 million , which was set way back when sports betting in New York first launched in January of this year.

Big numbers were put up by FanDuel, the market leader, with well over $65 million in gross gambling revenue. DraftKings was a distant second, with just short of $45 million in GGR. Caesars and BetMGM rounded out the top four, with over $18 million and $8 million, respectively. Rush Street, PointsBet, and Wynn Interactive were all well behind other market leaders in the state. And operators such as Resorts World and BallyBet brought in well below $1 million.

Online sports betting in New York is now legal has been legal for less than a year now. The state Gaming Commission was required by legislation to license to at least two sports betting platforms and four online sportsbooks. However, residents ended up with access to nine online sportsbooks. The official launch of mobile and online sports bets was on January 8, 2022,
