5 NFL Players Suspended for Gambling

Industry

Well, who couldn’t see this coming? At least five NFL players suspended after accusations of gambling. Or more specifically, for violating league rules and the gambling policy. The accusations have resulted in the suspension of the players ahead of the upcoming season.

Wide Receiver Quintez Cephus and Safety C.J. Moore, both of the Detroit Lions, have been suspended indefinitely for betting on games last year. Those suspensions will last the entire 2023 season. Two additional Detroit Wide Recievers, Stanley Berryhill and Jamerson Williams, were also suspended for six games. The team has since cut ties with Cephus and Moore, with a spokesperson adding “These players exhibited decision-making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules.”

Another NFL players suspended over gambling was from the Washington Commanders. Defensive End Shaka Toney was also suspended at least the end of the 2023 season over placing bets on NFL games last year. League officials were sure to emphasize that none of the players’ alleged betting activity compromised any of their games, and emphasizing that the League’s gambling policy prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging “in any form of gambling” whatsoever.

This is certainly not the first time we’ve seen NFL players suspended for betting on games. There was the very high profile case of Calvin Ridley, a Receiver from the Atlanta Falcons, who was suspended for the entire season last year. And then there was the case of Josh Shaw, a defensive player with the Arizona Cardinals, who was suspended with far fewer headlines back in 2019 for the exact same thing.
