The Pennsylvania gaming industry broke an all-time monthly record in March with $554.6 million in revenue, eclipsing the previous high set in December 2023 at $534.2 million. The March revenue figure was also a 7.64% increase over the $515.3 million revenue figure of last March.
The figures were unveiled by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), which regulates all forms of gaming approved in the state, along with fantasy contests. The board noted that an all-time high for iGaming revenue was responsible for spurring the overall increase, with online casino jumping 28.95% from March last year.
The regulator broke down March revenue by vertical. Revenue from the play of retail slot machines was $227.9 million, a 1.10% increase when compared to March 2023, despite the number of slot machines declining from 25,643 to 24,886. In contrast, retail table games revenue decreased by 0.77% from March last year to $58.2 million in 2024.
However, it was online casino and its aforementioned jump of almost 30% that helped drive the overall increase, amounting to $191 million. Online slots revenue increased 29.3% to $135.5 million, while internet table games revenue was also up 31.2% to $53.1 million. In contrast, online poker revenue was down 14.4% to $2.5 million.
The picture was a mixed one for sports betting, which saw a handle of $800.7 million in March, 10.67% above last year’s total, but posted taxable revenue of $45.6 million, 10% lower when compared to 2023. Of all March revenue, $42.3 million came from online betting and $3.2 million from retail.
Completing the report, the PGCBC announced total adjusted revenue of $3.7 million, or 0.48% lower than March 2023, for video gaming terminals (VGTs); while fantasy contests revenue was down by 21.07% to $1.1 million in March this year.
As for market leaders, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course placed first among all casinos when all forms of gaming are taken into account at $88.2 million in revenue, up 8.96%, driven by its stellar online gaming performance. The casino led the iGaming segment, posting $72.3 million in revenue.
Turning to sports betting, Valley Forge Casino Resort, along with partner FanDuel, remains the market leader in Pennsylvania. Revenue for March amounted to $24.4 million, from a total handle of $333.2 million.
Total tax revenue generated collectively through all forms of gaming and fantasy contests was $229.6 million during the record month.
