Ohio-Closer-to-Legalizing-Online-Casino-Gaming-with-New-Bill

Ohio could soon expand its gaming industry with the introduction of a bill aimed at legalizing online casino gaming. State Senator Niraj Antani introduced the bill this week, marking another step in Ohio’s journey toward legalizing more forms of gambling. The legislation would allow internet casino gaming, such as online poker and digital slot machines.

The comprehensive 146-page bill, though yet to be assigned an official number, outlines the responsibilities of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, which will be tasked with overseeing and licensing operators to manage internet-based gaming services within the state.

Ohio’s Growing Gaming Sector

Ohio has taken gradual steps toward expanding its gambling industry. A 2009 constitutional amendment allowed casinos to operate within the state, and the more recent legalization of sports betting in 2021 has been a massive success. Antani was a joint sponsor of the bill that brought sports betting to Ohio, and now, his attention has shifted to bringing online casino gaming into the mix.

The idea of legalizing online casinos US-wide isn’t new. Other states like Pennsylvania and Michigan have successfully launched regulated iGaming markets. For instance, in Pennsylvania, iGaming generated $174.3 million in revenue in July 2024 alone, underscoring the economic potential such a move could bring to Ohio.

Revenue and Economic Impact

Antani’s proposed bill comes at a time when Ohio is watching closely the financial impact of iGaming in other states. If passed, legal online gaming could generate significant tax revenue for Ohio, similar to the success seen in Michigan, where legal online gambling has flourished since its 2021 launch.

Ohio lawmakers are aware of the financial opportunities that iGaming could bring, especially in light of the economic challenges facing many states. If online casino gaming is legalized, the additional tax revenue could be used to support public services and infrastructure projects across the state.

In a press release, Antani emphasized the success Ohio has had with gaming reforms over the last decade, particularly with sports betting. As he pointed out, gaming has evolved in this US state and thanks to the massive success of sports betting, the timing for legalization of interactive gaming in the state is just perfect.

He also noted that many Ohio residents do not live close to a physical casino or racino, making online gaming a more accessible alternative for entertainment. Players often prefer online casinos due to their convenience, allowing access from anywhere and anytime, unlike land-based casinos with specific locations and hours.

Online platforms offer a wider variety of games and betting options, often with lower minimum stakes and better bonuses. Privacy and the ability to play without social pressure also contribute to their appeal. Additionally, online casinos provide instant transactions and faster game play, enhancing the overall experience.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the potential benefits, the road to legalization is likely to face opposition, especially from conservative lawmakers and groups that traditionally oppose the expansion of gambling. Changes to Ohio’s gambling laws are typically met with scrutiny and often require voter approval, making the legislative process slow.

Nevertheless, Antani’s push to legalize iGaming reflects a broader shift in public opinion. As more states across the country embrace online gaming, Ohio may soon follow suit, bringing digital casino games to its residents.
