Michigan regulator authorizes BetMGM to host multi-state internet poker with New Jersey players

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has approved BetMGM to operate multi-state online poker games, allowing players in Michigan to compete with those in New Jersey. The move, aligned with the Lawful Internet Gaming Act and the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), aims to provide a larger pool of players, leading to a more competitive poker environment.

BetMGM, the platform provider for MGM Grand Detroit, submitted its request to participate in multi-state poker in May. The approval enables BetMGM to launch multi-state gaming for No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha Hi, and Fixed Limit 7-Card Stud Hi, with the possibility of expanding the game selection pending future MGCB approval.

Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, said: “This authorization represents a significant step forward in the development of online gaming within our state boundaries. We are confident that the partnership with BetMGM will enhance the gaming experience for Michigan players and drive growth in the industry.”

The approval builds on Michigan’s decision in May 2022 to join MSIGA, connecting the state’s online poker players with those in other jurisdictions, including Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, and West Virginia.

Michigan currently licenses three operators to offer online poker: BetMGM, partnered with MGM Grand Detroit; the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, in partnership with World Series of Poker (WSOP); and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, which operates with PokerStars. Both PokerStars and WSOP previously received MGCB approval to offer multi-state play.

The shared liquidity feature officially launched on Nov 6, allowing players across Michigan and New Jersey to enjoy a broadened, more dynamic online poker experience.
