As Kentucky marks the first anniversary of legal sports betting, Governor Andy Beshear reflected on the impressive impact it has had on the state’s economy. Speaking at a recent update, Beshear confirmed that sports betting has outperformed expectations, bringing in substantial revenue during its first year of operation.
Since the launch of online wagering in September 2023, Kentucky residents have wagered over $2.15 billion through digital platforms. As a result, the state has collected more than $36 million in taxes, contributing to the economy’s steady growth.
Millions of Reasons to Celebrate
DraftKings and FanDuel have been the dominant operators in the state, with DraftKings leading in wager volume and FanDuel generating the most revenue. In July alone, FanDuel accounted for 40% of Kentucky’s gross operator revenue.
“For fiscal year 2024, sports wagering beat all odds by bringing in $37.2 million in revenue from sports wagering, taxes, and licensing fees. In July, driven by interest in the Summer Olympics, the trend continued, generating an additional $2 million in state tax revenue and bringing us close to $40 million in revenue through July. With one year of data, we can see some initial trends.”
With the fall season on the horizon, Beshear anticipates even more revenue as college and professional football betting ramps up. He also mentioned the significant contribution from March Madness and the NHL and NBA playoffs.
As Kentucky’s sports betting market continues to grow, Beshear is optimistic about its future. He emphasized the importance of monitoring the problem gambling fund to ensure long-term sustainability and better data collection. With positive trends expected for the fall season, Kentucky’s success in legal sports betting sets a strong foundation for the coming years.
Retrospective of Sports Betting Legalization in Kentucky
As of late September 2023, Kentuckians can place sports wagers directly from their mobile phones. According to the law, betting is accessible to anyone physically within the state, regardless of residency.
With Kentucky neighboring six states that also offer online sportsbooks, this opportunity came with convenience for bettors. This online betting launch followed closely on the heels of the state’s introduction of in-person sports betting, which began just two weeks earlier.
To date, multiple mobile sportsbooks have been authorized by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), among which ESPN BET, BetMGM Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, Fanatics Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Kentucky Sports Wagering Advisory Council has greenlighted a comprehensive list of sports and events for betting, as outlined in the sports wagering catalog. This includes MLB, UFC, NFL, college football, NBA, NCAA basketball, and the PGA Tour.
Kentucky bettors can take part in a wide array of traditional betting formats, such as moneyline, spread, over/under, prop bets, and parlays. While the Bluegrass State itself does not host any professional sports teams, it allows bets on teams from other states.
The minimum legal age for sports betting in Kentucky is 18. Having in mind that the standard 21-year age limit is seen in most other states, this allows a wider demographic to participate.
